NRA joins coalition to advocate for fair tax rates

The National Restaurant Association has joined the Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates, a new group that advocates for tax reform through fair, effective tax rates that businesses pay.

“In order to spur job creation and economic growth throughout the economy and the restaurant industry, there needs to be a focus on an equal treatment of businesses under the tax code,” said Scott DeFife, the NRA’s executive vice president of policy and government affairs. “By eliminating unwarranted tax preferences, lawmakers would have the opportunity to lower both corporate and individual tax rates and promote more robust economic growth.”

The coalition’s members, which include small business owners who pay taxes as individuals as well as large corporations paying corporate rates, plan to encourage officials of the Obama administration and members of Congress to use effective tax rates as a leading metric as tax reform develops on Capitol Hill. The coalition hopes effective-tax-rate comparisons would bolster legislation that broadens the tax base while lowering rates for corporations as well as pass-through businesses, such as S-corporations, Partnerships, LLC’s and individuals.

Though it does not plan to take positions on specific tax provisions, the coalition said it would concentrate on the benefits of viewing tax reform through the lens of effective tax rates with the goal of creating a fair, neutral playing field across all industries and business sectors.

In addition to the NRA, members of the coalition include Associated Builders and Contractors, Associated General Contractors, International Foodservice Distributors Association, International Franchise Association, National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, National Federation of Independent Business, Retail Industry Leaders Association, S Corporation Association and Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council.
