New Restaurant Advocacy Fund advances industry's policy interests

The National Restaurant Association has unveiled the Restaurant Advocacy Fund, an initiative that will help support advocacy and issue campaigns on legislative and regulatory issues important to restaurants of all sizes, from all regions of the country.

The initiative builds on the success of the Save American Free Enterprise (SAFE) fund, which has raised and spent nearly $7 million since 1996 to protect the restaurant industry from harmful regulations and legislative proposals.

“The Restaurant Advocacy Fund will be a powerful resource for action at both the national and state levels,” said Scott DeFife, executive vice president of policy and government affairs for the National Restaurant Association. “The industry faces an increasing number of complex issues that threaten restaurants’ bottom lines. This program will ensure we can address these challenges wherever they emerge.”

“The Restaurant Advocacy Fund is a truly grassroots initiative, supporting restaurants’ interests in cooperation with the National Restaurant Association, state restaurant associations, independent and multi-unit chains and other industry partners nationwide,” said Rob Gifford, executive vice president of political advocacy for the National Restaurant Association. “With the support of our members, we will protect the industry’s interests and advocate for positive change.”

The National Restaurant Association has a strong record of positively influencing the public policy debate on behalf of its members. Since 1996, SAFE fund resources have been used to protect the restaurant industry and elevate the industry’s position on issues such as tax increases, labor laws such as the Employee Free Choice Act and mandatory paid sick leave, as well as to promote sensible solutions in the areas of immigration reform and menu labeling.

This year, the Restaurant Advocacy Fund will help to ensure restaurateurs’ voices are heard on hot-topic issues including health care, debit card “swipe” fees, union organizing, and tax reform.
