Overtime: What you need to know now

Concerned about how the Department of Labor’s new overtime rule will affect your restaurant business? Join us Nov. 10 to learn more about the regulation and what it will mean for you and your employees.

We’ll give you a brief overview of the rule and answers to your compliance questions. Alex Passantino, partner at Seyfarth Shaw and former acting administrator of the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division, and Shannon Meade, our director of labor and workforce, will lead the discussion.

The DOL published a final overtime rule last spring that, among other things, makes a drastic increase to the salary threshold for exempt employees, from $23,660 to $47,476 annually. That’s more than double the current standard overnight. Additionally, the Department will make automatic increases to the salary threshold every three years, starting Jan. 1, 2020. The rule is set to take effect Dec. 1, 2016.

Some lawmakers are pressing for changes in the regulation, but it’s unclear whether Congress will act before Dec. 1. The National Restaurant Association supports bills to delay or modify the new federal overtime rule.
