The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) ProStart program is now taught in Washington, D.C.

The two-year program, which offers instruction in culinary arts and restaurant management skills to high-school students, debuted in September at three schools in the District: Roosevelt, Roosevelt S.T.A.Y. and Ballou.

“Bringing ProStart to Washington, D.C. is a huge win for our Foundation,” said Rob Gifford, the NRAEF’s executive vice president. “We are officially in all 50 states, and now, the District of Columbia. Thank you to the team who helped make this possible. We look forward to serving the future leaders of the restaurant industry right here in the Foundation’s very own backyard.”

Offering ProStart in D.C. is a joint effort between the NRAEF and the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW). Kathy Hollinger, RAMW’s president and CEO, said the time was right to start its D.C. chapter.

“This program will create myriad opportunities for enrolled students by giving them access to accomplished mentors and hands-on work experience in D.C. restaurants,” she said. “Their classrooms are training grounds in which they will learn from industry leaders to prepare for long-lasting, fulfilling careers. At the same time, it will benefit D.C. restaurateurs by providing them with a talented workforce that is crucial to sustaining one of the city’s largest industries.”

The national ProStart program is currently taught to 140,000 students in more than 1,800 schools. Following the two-year instruction, students take two exams and complete 400 hours of industry work experience, preparing them to enter the restaurant and foodservice industry’s workforce. Students who excel in the program can compete in state- and national-level competitions as well as the annual National ProStart Invitational.

The 2019 National ProStart Invitational will be held May 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
