Robert Irvine: Make healthful choices possible

Celebrity chef Robert Irvine has a message for restaurant operators: serving up healthful meals to children is not only possible, but essential.

Irvine, host of the Food Network television series “Restaurant Impossible” is challenging restaurateurs around the country to start offering more healthful options, like those featured in the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program.

Irvine, who also serves as spokesman for industry distributor Sysco Corp., said the company’s recent partnership with the NRA – to develop more than 25 new Kids LiveWell-certified menu options that will be distributed to smaller chains and independent operators around the country – is a great way to make more healthful choices available to kids and their parents when they dine out.

“First of all, I’m a big believer   in my shows and in life   about kids and education and healthy eating,” the chef/fitness buff said.

But the only way to succeed in getting kids to embrace more healthful foods and lifestyles, he noted, is if the industry pulls together to create and offer better choices on their menus. He added that Sysco and the NRA, through the Kids LiveWell program, are helping to make those choices more accessible to restaurateurs and their customers.

“Kids have got to live well,” he said, “and that’s where we’re going. They’re our future. Sysco, the NRA and Kids LiveWell; the independent operators [and] all the chain restaurants have to get on board and help us make sure that kids eat healthy, exercise and understand about food.”
