Going mobile: Restaurant guests phone it in

Here’s the 411: Consumers can’t live without their smartphones, not even when it comes to  dining out.

As technology becomes an increasingly larger part of the restaurant experience, guests are literally letting their fingers do the walking.

Hey, look me over …

According to our new State of the Industry report, nearly nine in 10 smartphone users look up restaurant locations, directions or hours before choosing their dining destination. A third of smartphone users do so at least once a week.

In addition, more than half of smartphone users say they use their phones to capitalize on rewards, loyalty points and special deals restaurants offer them.

A majority of restaurants feature mobile-friendly websites, and more operators are now embracing mobile apps.

Our data finds that one in three restaurants now offers a mobile app, but there’s a big disparity between the restaurant segments offering the technology. Right now, chains or franchised restaurants are four times more likely to offer mobile apps than independent restaurants.

Download the complete State of the Industry report at Restaurant.org/Outlook. It’s free to members, $325 to non-members.
