This governor is taking a surprisingly strong stand for business

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) is coming out swinging against a growing trend by cities and towns to set their own minimum wage rates and other employment mandates for local businesses.

Ducey used his Jan. 11 State of the State address to ask state lawmakers to "put the brakes on ill-advised plans to create a patchwork of different wage and employment laws."

"If these political subdivisions don’t stop, they’ll drive our economy off a cliff .... Ninety-one cities and towns with 91 different employment laws isn’t local control – it’s California-style chaos.

"These efforts are based on the trendy, feel-good policies that are stifling opportunity across the nation -- failing everywhere they’ve been tried. So why would we try them here?"

He said he's willing to reallocate state funds if needed. "I will use every constitutional power of the executive branch and leverage every legislative relationship to protect small businesses and the working men and women they employ -- up to and including changing the distribution of state-shared revenue. We will ensure Arizona continues to grow jobs, not destroy them.”

Steve Chucri, Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO, praised the governor's stance. “Our organization has remained adamantly opposed to the actions of a handful of cities in Arizona proposing ordinances to regulate business ... It is crucial for the restaurant and hospitality industry to have consistency across the state on matters of employment and wage laws, and we are proud and energized to have a governor willing to stand up for the best interest of our industry.”

“It allows restaurateurs to be restaurateurs, rather than worry about over regulation and scrutiny from multiple levels of government. We look forward to another year full of accomplishments with all legislators.”

The governor also singled out Nia Thomas, a 10-year-old Tucson resident whose "Oodles of Zoodles" recipe got her named the Arizona winner of the 2015 Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. Nia cooked her dish at the White House this summer for President Obama. Louis Basile of the Arizona-based Wildflower Bread Company then featured Nia's dish on his menu and donated the proceeds to the NRA Educational Foundation ProStart program.
