Top officials to speak at Public Affairs Conference

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Maria Contreras-Sweet, administrator of the Small Business Administration, will be among the featured speakers at the National Restaurant Association’s Public Affairs Conference.

Contreras-Sweet, who will speak on the first day of the conference, came to the Small Business Administration after a diverse and successful career in the public and private sectors. A first-generation immigrant from Mexico, she was the first Latina to hold a California state cabinet post when she served as secretary of business, transportation and housing. She worked as director of public affairs for Westinghouse’s 7-Up/RC Bottling Company and rose to become an equity partner in the company. She founded the multi-billion dollar California Endowment, which works to promote public health in California. She founded her own consulting company, Contreras Sweet Enterprises, and two other companies—Fortius Holdings and ProAmerica Bank—which provide financial services to small businesses.

McConnell, who has served in the Senate since 1984, will address attendees during the breakfast session on the second day of the conference.

As a legislator, McConnell has been a strong ally of the restaurant industry and numerous other issues that impact businesses. He has been a leader of the effort to change the health care law’s definition of “full time” from 30 to 40 hours, has supported ending corn-based ethanol subsidies, and recently voted to stop the National Labor Relations Board’s harmful “ambush-election” rule from taking effect.

The NRA’s Public Affairs Conference, which will be held April 14-15 in Washington, D.C., is the best opportunity for restaurant operators to join together as one collective voice to advocate for the industry. This year for the first time, the NRA and the American Hotel & Lodging Association are joining forces for our annual advocacy conferences. This partnership is an incredible opportunity for our industries to come together in front of lawmakers and demonstrate the strength and prowess of the hospitality industry.
