Video: Opportunity is plentiful in restaurant industry

The restaurant industry thrives on upward mobility. That’s the message the National Restaurant Association is promoting in a new series of video testimonials unveiled this week.
The #RestaurantsWork-branded videos feature Husein Kitabwalla, Sodexo Retail Brand Group President; Julia Stewart, CEO of DineEquity, Inc.; and Seattle-based restaurateur Tom Douglas, winner of three James Beard awards. The three industry stakeholders highlight the advancement opportunities they have experienced within the industry. 
“I put myself through college by working in dining services 40 hours a week,” says Kitabwalla. “What’s grounding is the fact that you can start from being a dishwasher to being a leader of a large company or large division.”
“I started as a food server and now I’m running the very company [where I started],” says Stewart. “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m very blessed that I’m living the American Dream.”
According to new research from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, 88 percent of employees say they are proud to work in the restaurant industry, with 75 percent of them indicating those jobs are a gateway to a strong career path and upward mobility within the industry. 
Eight of 10 employees said the restaurant industry provides opportunity for those who want to succeed based on hard work. More than nine of 10 managers, supervisors and chefs said they started out in entry-level positions in restaurants, as did 77 percent of restaurant owner/operators. 
“There is so much opportunity out there,” affirms Douglas. “If you work hard, you have opportunity.”
