Virtual career fair aims to attract military

More than 250,000 servicemen and women will separate from active duty each year for the next five years. At the same time, the restaurant and foodservice industry is expected to create more than 800,000 new jobs.

That’s why, for the second year in a row, our Educational Foundation is teaming up with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to host the Hospitality Career Connection, a virtual career fair that will help former military men and women start civilian careers in our industry. The event will take place June 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT.

What it is: The Hospitality Career Connection will connect job seekers with some of the industry’s top hospitality companies, including Aramark, BJ’s Restaurants, Ecolab, Sodexo and Sysco, who are looking to fill various positions in culinary arts, restaurant management, construction and environmental services, among others. Last year, more than 500 veterans, servicemen and women and their spouses participated in the event.

How to participate: Job seekers are encouraged to preregister for the career fair and upload their resumes at http://www.nraefcareerfair.org. Click on the registration link under “Job Seekers” in the top navigation bar. Registration will also be permitted during the event. There is no charge to participate. Since the event takes place online, all you need to attend is a computer connected to the Internet.

“These veterans have dedicated their lives to fight for the freedoms we enjoy daily. Having the chance to give back by connecting them with new careers through top-notch industry employers honors our commitment to support America's servicemen and women.”

Rob Gifford
NRAEF executive vice president

How it works: The career fair will allow prospective employees and employers to have live conversations via instant chat. They’ll be able to share informational content for various job listings through the uploading and submission of resumes and other pertinent information. Further interaction between the parties will take place on the site’s virtual Networking Lounge.

The career fair’s goal: We’re looking to help reduce unemployment within the veteran population. Our foundation’s goal is to assist our industry in employing at least 10 percent of separating U.S. military personnel in foodservice careers.
