One in ten adults are planning to eat their Thanksgiving meal at a restaurant

Nearly one in 10 adults (9 percent) plan to eat a Thanksgiving meal at a restaurant this year, according to a new survey from the National Restaurant Association.

Many consumers are also planning to use restaurant-prepared food to supplement their Thanksgiving meal at home.  Of the respondents who said they plan to eat a Thanksgiving meal at either their home or someone else’s home, more than one in 10 said they plan to pick up parts of the meal (9 percent) or all of the meal (4 percent) from a restaurant.

When choosing a restaurant for their Thanksgiving meal, tradition and familiarity are important factors for many consumers.  Among adults who are planning to visit a restaurant this Thanksgiving, 31 percent say the restaurant is one that they traditionally go to on Thanksgiving.  Thirty percent describe the restaurant as one that they only go to for a special occasion, while 21 percent say they are going to one of their favorite restaurants.  Only 18 percent say they will be visiting a restaurant that they have never been to before.

Dining Plans While Shopping Thanksgiving Weekend

Forty-three percent of adults say they plan to go out shopping on Thanksgiving Day or the Friday after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday.  Of the respondents who said they plan to go out shopping on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday this year, 72 percent said they expect that they will visit a restaurant or fast food place while they are out shopping.

Survey Methodology

Figures are based on a national online survey of 1,017 adults conducted by ORC International, November 9 – 12, 2017.  The survey asked consumers about their dining and shopping plans for Thanksgiving weekend.
